ROCANIIRU – “Fire, Earth, Water” | Tea, As It Is
Tea Master Gao Ding-shi “First Visit to Japan – Tea Gathering Announcement”
Exhibition Lin Yong Sheng “Tea for one, for two, and for three”
We held a two-day tea gathering set in the mountains of Matsumoto and an old folk house, opening the senses to fire, earth, water, and the sounds and scents of the forest. On the first day, we drew mountain water, built a hearth from stones, and shared Wuyi rock tea around a fire. On the second day, we walked through the mountains, had lunch by a stream, and then prepared a tea setting in the forest. It was neither a tea room nor an ordinary outdoor tea gathering, but a time for mountain tea, becoming one with the workings of nature and tasting the present moment.
To mark the first visit to Japan by Taiwanese tea master Gao Dingshi, who continues to make tea by entrusting it to the natural ecology of the land, we held tea gatherings in Hyogo and Kyoto. At DOKI ROKKO on Mount Rokko, we hosted the overnight “Autumn Chinese Tea Gathering,” where tea was deeply savored together with food and music. At Kojitsukyo in Kyoto’s Okazaki area, we held a tea setting devoted to encountering Gao’s tea one infusion at a time. It was an opportunity to experience his way of tea-making, left to nature’s own ecology, and the philosophy he has upheld for more than thirty years.
We held the first exhibition in Japan by Lin Yongsheng, one of Taiwan’s leading makers of tea utensils. The exhibition introduced tea vessels born not from trends, but from a pursuit of the beauty of tea, with guests actually brewing tea, holding the pieces, and tasting tea with them. We also prepared Taiwanese tea favored by Lin, ROCANIIRU’s “Tea Notes,” and dry sweets by Hoshizukiyo and Okashimaru, while holding tea gatherings and workshops each day. It was an exhibition that touched on the function and beauty of tea utensils, and on a culture of sharing tea intimately within everyday life.
