antique-chinese-ceramics-149
SMALL CUP, Iridescent green-glazed, Han Dynasty（206BCE–220CE）

During the Han dynasty, numerous green-glazed ceramics made with lead glazes were produced, fashioned into a variety of forms as funerary objects and everyday vessels. Over time the green glaze may weather, developing a silvery surface sheen or a whitish, powdery encrustation. This small green-glazed cup clearly exhibits such age-related changes.

The form is that of a small cup: the rim flares outward while the body tapers from the shoulder toward a raised foot. Though small enough to fit in the palm, it retains the rustic vigor characteristic of ancient pottery.

On the exterior the green glaze remains in mottled patches, and in places a faint, silvered sheen can be seen. Where the glaze has flaked away, the reddish body is revealed; the mingling of green, white, and earthy tones produces the characteristic appearance of an excavated ceramic.

Modest in size for practical use as a sake cup, it nevertheless serves well as a display cup, a small incense container, or a shelf ornament. When paired with Joseon wares or other antique ceramics, the quiet presence of ancient pottery is especially pronounced.

There is overall loss of glaze, silvering, exposed clay, and surface degradation from weathering. Please understand its condition as an old excavated ceramic and appreciate these features as part of its appearance.
