He was the younger brother of the renowned Ogata Korin, who was six years his senior.  \n\u003cbr\u003eIn 1689, Kenzan established the Shōjindō south of Ninna-ji Temple, where he dedicated himself to Zen practice and scholarly pursuits. It was in the vicinity of Ninna-ji that he studied ceramics under the esteemed potter Nonomura Ninsei.  \n\u003cbr\u003eKenzan's style is characterized by its free-spirited brushwork and a rustic charm that lies within its refinement. Many of his works are collaborative pieces where Kenzan crafted the vessels and Korin provided the decorative painting.
