LIDDED BOX BASE, Ko-Seto, Kamakura Period（1185–1333CE）

A small Ko-Seto lidded box dating to the Kamakura period.

This small work, measuring approximately 5.5cm in width and fitting in the palm, displays a low, gently rounded body with a modestly opened mouth. The form shows a pronounced warp from firing: the body’s outline does not form a perfect circle but is shifted to one side as if pressed. Though not a precisely finished miniature, this distortion rather enhances its antique character and harmonizes with the rich surface created by the thickly applied ash glaze.

The principal attraction is the effect of the thickly applied ash glaze. Milky, opacified areas of glaze, pale aquamarine pools, and sections of clay that have browned overlap in complex layers, effectively conveying the firing character typical of Ko-Seto. The glaze is not uniform: it shows flaking, slight wrinkling, crazing, and exposed clay, forming a small landscape that has developed over a long period.

Ko-Seto refers to glazed ceramics produced at Seto from the Kamakura to the Muromachi periods. Renowned among Japan’s medieval ceramics for its early use of glaze, it made extensive use of ash and iron glazes to produce jars, bottles, lidded boxes, Buddhist ritual implements, and everyday vessels. In this piece the characteristic Ko-Seto surface — a thick application of ash glaze — is clearly evident.

Though modest in size, the vessel offers striking details—the flow of the glaze, the variations from firing, and its distinctly warped profile. Set on a desk or shelf, it quietly lends the calm presence of an antique ceramic.

The rim and body show chips, areas of glaze loss, crazing, soil staining, and surface abrasion. Although the piece exhibits age-related wear overall, it remains in good condition for a small example of medieval pottery.
