The trough is boat-shaped with its ends gently upturned and is fitted with two applied feet splayed outward in a V-shape; it was made as a practical implement for grinding and pulverizing medicinal materials.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe body is entirely encircled with a dense arabesque scroll rendered in fine underglaze-blue lines; the central area of each side is set off like a framed panel and painted with a landscape-inspired design. Arabesque decoration also appears on the chamfered surfaces of the foot. A transparent glaze covers the slightly bluish white porcelain body, while the underglaze blue shows the soft, gently diffused tones characteristic of Imari, with occasional areas of bleeding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePorcelain yagen are uncommon, and this example is in good condition.
