It is presented as a teapot stand.

A small tray constructed from thinly split bamboo, formed into a ring and woven with an openwork rim. The surface is coated in a deep reddish-brown lacquer, where the well-worn sheen and areas of darkening overlap.

Fine notches mark the rim, and beneath them a leaf-like openwork motif encircles the piece. Though modest in scale, the sides exhibit a pleasing play of light and shadow; when a teapot or tea jar is set upon it, a slight margin of space is created around the vessel.

Constructed of lightweight bamboo, it is sized to complement sencha utensils or Chinese tea arrangements. In addition to serving as a teapot stand, it can also be used as a tray to gather small saucers, tea scoops, and tea needles.

Overall there is surface wear and darkening from age, flaking of the lacquer, cracks, and damage around the rim. The openwork sections also show chips and splits, yet the piece retains the subdued, seasoned appearance characteristic of older bamboo-core lacquerware.
