antique-western-ceramics-41
SMALL ALBARELLO-STYLE JAR, Delftware, white-glazed and kintsugi repair, Mitate（katakuchi）, Dutch Antique, Early Modern Period（16th–19th centuries）

This small albarello-style jar, coated in a white glaze, was fired in Delft in the Netherlands in the 18th century. Its cylindrical body, slightly waisted, derives from the albarello (apothecary jar), a form widely used to store medicinal herbs and spices.

Delftware spread throughout Europe during the Age of Exploration and was mass-produced for everyday uses such as ointment jars. In Japan, from the Edo period onward it was absorbed into the tea‑ceremony world as red‑haired ware and often reinterpreted as water jars and lid rests.

This piece once had a small chip on the rim; when repairing it I personally reshaped it into a pouring-spout form and applied kintsugi. I reimagined it as a sake vessel for playful use.

The surface of this piece is a characteristic Delft white glaze, achieved by adding tin to a transparent glaze; its softly luminous milky whiteness gently reflects light. The body shows areas of glaze loss, firing discoloration, and abrasion, presenting the serene aspect typical of a vessel that has matured over many years. The base retains throwing marks and traces of kiln clay, which impart a pleasing patina.
