antique-japanese-art-20
CARVED WOODEN EBISU AND DAIKOKU FIGURES, Pair, Edo–Meiji Period（1603–1912CE）

A small pair of fortune-god figures depicting Ebisu and Daikokuten. Carved from dense, seasoned wood, the deeply darkened surface bears a pronounced patina of long age. Ebisu wears a court cap; Daikokuten wears a hood, carries a sack on his back, and holds a small mallet. While they adopt the forms of the Seven Lucky Gods, their expressions bear a simple, familiar smile reminiscent of a rural field deity.

Rather than carving minute realistic details, the forms are modeled with strong planes that give the figures their stance. A slight incision at the eyes and mouth suggests a smile, and although the treatment of clothing and the body is economical, the figures have a compact yet powerful presence when viewed from the front. Smoke-darkened, they have the mien of folk-religion images of fortune deities. One senses that they have long been objects of daily veneration. There is no major damage; the condition is good. Please refer to the photographs.
