Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743)
A distinguished ceramic artist and painter of the Edo Period, Kenzan was born in the third year of the Kanbun era and passed away on June 2, 1743, in the third year of the Kanpo era. He was the younger brother of the renowned Ogata Korin, who was six years his senior.
In 1689, Kenzan established the Shōjindō south of Ninna-ji Temple, where he dedicated himself to Zen practice and scholarly pursuits. It was in the vicinity of Ninna-ji that he studied ceramics under the esteemed potter Nonomura Ninsei.
Kenzan's style is characterized by its free-spirited brushwork and a rustic charm that lies within its refinement. Many of his works are collaborative pieces where Kenzan crafted the vessels and Korin provided the decorative painting. His designs embody the aesthetics of the Rinpa school, distinguished by their elegant and sophisticated motifs.
