This is an antique Tokoname yamacha-wan (tea bowl) from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period. While it can also be classified as a yamacha-chawan (wild tea bowl) in terms of pottery, it is a simple unglazed pottery that was produced for approximately 400 years, starting from the late Heian period (late 11th century) until the beginning of the Sengoku period (late 15th century). It was created as an everyday-use pottery during a time when the mass production of glazed ceramics was progressing, shifting from luxury items to practical wares. This particular piece is a relatively early yamacha-wan with an attractive reddish firing. It is in good condition and evokes a desire to arrange it with wildflowers.
