This is a tasteful bronze bowl with rusted finish. It was eaten with betel, which became a popular drink in Southeast Asia from around the 11th century, and this is a limestone container for betel. Similar items have also been excavated from Khmer period ruins in Cambodia. This item is likely from the Sukhothai period (13th to 16th centuries). Due to the jewel on top and elegant shape, it is sometimes introduced in Japanese antique art books as a relic container. The lid of this item is attached.
