TERRACOTTA FEMALE HEAD, Ptolemaic Style, Prehistoric（Before the 3rd century）

Terracotta female head in the Ptolemaic style.

This small female figure, modeled in a single piece from the head to the nape of the neck, presents a serene, forward-facing countenance and hair neatly parted to either side. The reddish-brown clay is overlaid with a subtle earthy patina, producing a soft texture characteristic of ancient terracotta.

In Ptolemaic Egypt, Greek modes of figural representation overlapped with Egyptian sculptural sensibilities, producing a distinctive serenity in female figures, goddess images, and votive statues. This work similarly evokes the female types of the Hellenistic-period eastern Mediterranean world.

The facial features are not markedly exaggerated; the eyes, nasal bridge, and mouth are rendered with concise, measured form. The hair flows to either side, enveloping the head, and in profile the outline rises gracefully from the forehead through the nose to the jaw.

The reverse is hollowed out, with the form below the neck contained in this shape. Though small, the piece rewards attention in frontal, profile, and three‑quarter views.

Although the findspot and place of manufacture cannot be established, this elegant terracotta female head evokes the style of Ptolemaic Egypt or the Hellenistic eastern Mediterranean.
