A Ko-Mino red Oribe dish with an orchid‑grass motif, Azuchi-Momoyama period.

This Ko-Mino dish bears an Oribe glaze with a reddish tinge on one half and a white glaze on the other, and is decorated in iron-paint with orchid‑grass and lattice motifs. With a bold composition characteristic of the Momoyama period, the contrasting glazes, the iron-painted brushwork, and the coarse, earthy quality of the clay combine to create a forceful visual presence.

Fine crazing appears in the white-glazed areas, and spots of reddish-brown repair are scattered across the Red Oribe surface. Although there are some extensively restored sections, the vessel’s form remains intact, preserving the graceful, expansive silhouette typical of Momoyama pottery and the distinctive textures of Ko-Mino clay and glaze.

Two orchid-grass motifs are painted in the well, while a lattice pattern encircles the rim. The motifs are simple yet lively; the reserved areas of white glaze and the fields of Red Oribe color resonate with one another, combining into a unified pictorial composition.

Overall there are repairs, hairline cracks, crazing, stains, glaze loss, abrasion, and soiling. Please inspect the piece with its condition in mind. It is not in pristine condition and is priced accordingly so the antique Ko-Mino red Oribe can be enjoyed more accessibly. The work may be appreciated both for its documentary value and for the time-worn surface it has retained.
