This is a tasteful bronze bowl with rusted finish. There is lime on the inside. This was eaten with betel, which became a popular drink in Southeast Asia from around the 11th century, and this is a lime container for betel. Similar items have also been excavated from Khmer ruins in Cambodia. This item is likely from the Sukhothai period (13th to 16th centuries). Due to the jewel on top and elegant shape, it is sometimes introduced in Japanese antique art books as a relic container. The lid can be removed, so it can be used as a container of some kind or as an incense holder.
