OLD WOODEN YOHŌDANA, Meiji–Taisho Period (1868–1926 CE)

A four-sided shelf of aged wood, dating from the Meiji–Taisho period.

This narrow, upright shelf is divided into three tiers across the front. Width 28 cm, depth 19 cm, height 60.5 cm. Though not large, the wood is substantial, and the construction is more solid than it appears. The proportions make it well suited for displaying small jars, tea bowls, and incense burners.

The wood has darkened to a deep brown, with areas where a reddish ground shows through. The surface displays rubbing, thinning, and fine striations, and the well-used wood has developed a mellow sheen. The shelf boards and upright posts are gently rounded, giving the piece the composed, restrained presence characteristic of antique furniture.

Likely a Japanese shelf, its darkened wood and spare construction nonetheless resonate with antique furniture of the Joseon dynasty. It pairs well with small pieces of white porcelain, qingbai, or old ceramics, providing a place to display vessels while maintaining ample negative space.

The wood shows scuffs, scratches, areas of shrinkage, and grain streaks. There is no significant structural warping, and the piece can be used as a shelf as is.
