BLACK LACQUERED BOX, With adze-mark pattern, Laotian Antique, Early Modern Period（16th–19th centuries）

An assembled teak wooden box dating principally to the 19th century (circa 18th–19th centuries). Rather than being planed smooth, the surface preserves the adze‑cut texture left by hollowing with a hand adze. The overlapping marks of the blade produce undulations that convey a tension distinct from uniform grain, and they subtly alter the box’s appearance with changes in the angle of light.

The construction is strictly utilitarian: the side panels are joined by simple tenons and no nails are used. Grooves are cut into the lid and base so that the side panels merely slot in, creating a near dry-fit assembly. The design is pragmatically rational, allowing the piece to be disassembled for transport when necessary. Lacking ornament or incised marks, its form is a direct expression of having been made to be used and of having been used.

The surface is suffused with a black tone, and in worn areas the reddish-brown ground layer shows through. Rather than soot, this appears to be an old finish applied to protect and consolidate the wood; through long use it has been abraded and subtly blended into the surface. While no features remain that allow a definitive attribution of origin, the materials and construction strongly suggest a utilitarian object from inland Southeast Asia, including the region around Laos.

Though fundamentally a storage piece, it emanates a quiet presence within a room. Laid on its side, it can serve as a gallery flower stand or display plinth; set upright, it forms a backdrop for a single bloom. The boards may also be taken apart and presented individually. Its adze-marked black surface harmonizes beautifully with ceramics, antique textiles, stones, and tea utensils.
