SMALL ALBARELLO-STYLE JAR, Delftware, white-glazed, Dutch, 18th century, Early Modern Period（16th–19th centuries）

This small jar, crafted in the Dutch Delftware tradition, features a plump white-glazed surface that exhibits signs of wear, including areas where the glaze has chipped away to reveal the underlying clay. The gently tapered form of the body is reminiscent of the "albarello" (apothecary jar), which was widely used for the storage of herbs and spices.

Made from reddish clay and coated with tin glaze, this rustic ceramic piece was fired at low temperatures, leaving behind traces typical of mass-produced pottery, such as glaze pooling, unevenness, and marks from the firing process. The absence of decorative elements on the surface allows the contrast between the milky white glaze and the earthy texture of the clay to define the character of this vessel.

Much of the white Delftware was utilitarian, commonly used in dining and kitchen settings. The unadorned nature of these plain vessels did not carry any particular significance; they were simply left undecorated due to a lack of necessity. Yet, it is precisely this simplicity that imbues the piece with a quiet and serene presence.

This aesthetic also found its way to Japan, where it was incorporated into the tea ceremony as "Kōmote," reflecting a historical appreciation for such forms. Tea practitioners discovered new meanings in these otherwise purposeless jars, repurposing them as water containers or lid rests, thus enjoying the art of reinterpretation.

Though this small jar bears no name or special design, it quietly embodies the warmth characteristic of ceramics nurtured through everyday life, resonating gently within the palm of one's hand.
