A Sue ware cup from the Kofun period.

This is a hard-fired, shallow, dish-shaped Sue ware vessel. About 10cm wide, it has a low, gently flattened profile and a rim that projects slightly outward. Smaller than the typical Sue ware cup, its dimensions make it well suited for placement on a desk or shelf.

Sue ware is a hard-fired, unglazed ceramic made in Japan using techniques brought from the Korean peninsula during the Kofun period. Compared with Haji ware, it is firmer and characterized by a compact, grayish surface—qualities that this piece clearly displays in its dense, well-fired finish.

The vessel’s surface is predominantly ash-gray, containing fine grains of sand and black speckles. The exterior shows darkening from firing, and the rim bears wear and small chips. Its shallow, spreading profile is light in character, and although an ancient object, it integrates naturally into contemporary settings.

This versatile vessel can be filled with water to float small blossoms, fitted with short stems, or enjoyed as an object that reveals its earthy character. As shown in the photograph, the dry surface of Sue ware harmonizes beautifully with the soft texture of a few wildflowers.

The rim shows small chipping, and the vessel’s surface bears wear and rough patches in the clay. It was hard-fired and appears capable of holding water; however, owing to its age, please exercise caution with prolonged use.
