IRON LADLE, Indian Antique, Early Modern Period (16th–19th centuries)

An antique iron ladle from 17th-century India.

An old ladle with a deep, rounded bowl, a long iron handle, and a circular suspension ring. The handle is hammer‑flattened, and the forged joint to the bowl still retains visible forging marks. The surface displays a blend of red rust and black, fire‑darkened iron, clearly testifying to prolonged use close to heat as a working tool.

This object was formed by hammering, stretching, and bending iron. The bowl is thin, the rim shows slight warping, and the handle bears fine hammer marks and a subtle waviness across its planes. Unlike uniformly finished industrial products, each worked area reveals its own character, where the material’s hardness coexists with the soft lines produced by forging.

When examining old Indian tools one senses less a direct march toward a finalized ideal than a gradual determination of form as the maker works the material before them. In this ladle the maker’s movements remain evident in the bowl, the handle, and the hanging loop, giving the whole a remarkable cohesion. There is a distinctive strength inherent in a form shaped by practical use.

This iron ladle was originally used for cooking and for tasks around the hearth. Fitted with a ring, it can be hung on the wall so that the iron’s surface and the elegant line of its long handle are clearly visible. Filling the bowl with flowers and using it as a hanging flower container offers a charming alternative use.

The iron surface shows rust, wear, impact marks and some warping. Small rough areas are also visible along the rim of the bowl, but overall it is in good condition. An object of considerable character.
