A small terracotta mask disc of ancient Mediterranean origin.

A small terracotta disc bears the shallowly modeled visage of a bearded figure. The round, pierced eyes, open mouth, and flowing treatment of hair and beard suggest theatrical masks and mask-shaped ornaments from the ancient Greek through Roman periods.

This is not a mask intended to be worn, but a small ornament fashioned in the form of a mask, or a terracotta fragment of a votive character. The obverse displays overlapping areas of pale and brown clay, imparting a surface quality typical of ancient ceramics.

The reverse is flat. Though small, the eyes, mouth and beard are rendered with striking vitality; set on a desk or shelf, it suggests the theatrical presence of the ancient Mediterranean world.

The surface bears traces of adhering soil and an overall patina consistent with age. The findspot and place of manufacture cannot be confirmed, but it is thought to be connected to the mask traditions of the ancient Greek and Roman world.

In the photograph the object has been secured with museum gel for photographic purposes. Museum gel is not included.
