LARGE JAR, Painted Pottery, Majiayao Culture(3300–2050BCE)

Sale price$2,137.00

The term "Anderson pottery" is derived from Dr. Anderson, a Swedish archaeologist who first discovered this type of ceramics. It refers to a collection of painted pottery belonging to the Majiayao culture, specifically categorized as part of the Hemanshan type.

Anderson pottery comes in various shapes, and this piece represents one of the most iconic forms, characterized by its elongated neck. Necked vessels are relatively rare compared to their non-necked counterparts, and those with a well-defined neck are even scarcer. The body, flaring out from a small foot into an inverted triangular shape, exudes a primitive and energetic presence, embodying the latent power of the earth.

This particular piece is in exceptionally good condition, with no significant repairs. It features a rare decorative embellishment around the neck and ears, adding to its uniqueness. The geometric patterns painted from the neck down to the body are believed to carry a magical significance, reflecting the wishes of the people. This work possesses such captivating qualities, allowing one to deeply appreciate the beauty of ancient pottery.
