This is the remains of an old Tokoname Yama tea bowl from the late Heian to early Kamakura period. Yama tea bowls are simple unglazed pottery that were produced from the late Heian period (late 11th century) until the beginning of the Sengoku period (late 15th century) for about 400 years. As mass production of ash-glazed pottery progressed and it changed from luxury items to everyday items, this was a bowl for everyday use that was born. This is a relatively early Yama tea bowl that has been fired very hard. The edges are crumbling and rounded. The surface is also worn down and there are holes. It would make a great bonsai.
