Banchen pottery has been gaining popularity in Japan in recent years, and this particular piece has fine lines engraved into the bottom of the vessel. The age and evolution of this type of pottery is still a mystery, but pottery with this kind of pattern inscribed lines on hard, fired red clay is thought to have been made in the early Banchen period around 1000 BC.
