本品は宋代（960–1279年）の中国出土の灰陶小壺です。口縁部は薄手で成形されており、全体に施釉はなく、よく焼き締まった硬質の素地が特徴です。焼成時の還元炎の影響で器体は灰がかった色調を呈し、表面には長年土中で形成された赤茶色の酸化土が付着しています。
長い歳月を経た出土品ながら、保存状態は極めて良く、口縁や胴部に欠け・欠損、補修の痕跡も認められません。硬質な胎土のおかげで経年劣化が少なく、自立も安定しており実用に耐えうるほどしっかりしています。蓋を拵えれば、茶入としてもお使い頂ける一品です。
