A classical Tamba jar mizusashi from the Edo period.

This old Tamba jar has a rounded, full-bodied form and a low, wide mouth. It swells prominently from the shoulder into the body and narrows toward the base; its powerful silhouette conveys a pronounced sense of mass. The opening is broad, and a lacquered lid is provided, the vessel having been used as a water jar for the tea ceremony.

The surface reveals a reddish-brown clay body, with a field of yellow-sesame spotting centered on the shoulder. Fine stone inclusions, kiln-induced roughness, and horizontal wheel marks overlap to create the robust, earthy expression typical of old Tamba. The flow is not conspicuous; rather, restrained yellow-sesame speckles are scattered across the surface, giving it a composed presence as a tea utensil.

The rim bears a kintsugi repair. Rather than simply concealing the chips, the lines of gold contribute to the rim’s visual character, evoking the time it spent in use as a water jar. The interior has been treated to prevent leakage, leaving a strong sense of its use in the tea ceremony.

A lacquered lid is included. Although the lid bears old marks, the sheen of the black lacquer harmonizes with the jar’s clay surface and gives the whole piece a pleasing cohesion. The rim has been mended with gold, the yellow‑sesame spotting is attractive, and the pairing with the lacquered lid is well judged — an antique Tamba that is readily suited to use at a tea gathering.

The rim has been repaired with gold lacquer; the interior has been sealed to prevent leakage; the lacquered lid shows scratches. There are also kiln blemishes, pitting caused by stone inclusions, scuffs, and surface roughening.

A wooden storage box is included.
