江戸後期～明治初頭の古伊万里、珍しい染付の薬研です。両端がやわらかく反る舟形の槽に八の字に開く貼付脚を二本備え、薬材を擂り碾くために作られた実用器です。
胴全面には細い呉須線の唐草文をびっしりと巡らせ、側面中央を額縁状に区画して山水風の意匠を描き分けています。脚の面取りにも唐草を配し、やや青みのある白磁胎に透明釉がかかる一方、呉須はところどころ滲みを伴う伊万里らしい柔らかな発色です。
磁器製の薬研は作例が少なく、本品は状態も良好です。野の草花がよく映えますので、花入としてもお愉しみいただけます。
