BAMBOO TEA SCOOP, Carved with safflower and lily design, maki-e, Meiji Period (1868–1912 CE)

This tea container is formed from a split length of bamboo that preserves the node. Through use the rim and corners have been softly worn down and a rubbed sheen has developed, so that its rounded profile feels pleasing in the hand. Painted on the exterior are safflower and lily motifs, their vivid coloration set off strikingly against the bamboo’s rustic surface. Examples of maki-e applied to bamboo are scarce, making this an uncommon design even for its time.

In the tea-room setting, its placement across the tea caddy appears composed, and the bamboo's tone and the floral hues create a pleasing atmosphere. The size is comfortable even in a woman's hand. Take time to enjoy the motion of scooping the tea leaves more slowly than usual.
