A vermilion-lacquered box dating to the Qing dynasty.
The horizontally elongated body is gently rounded and fitted with a shallow, domed lid. A simple clasp appears on the front, with circular ring handles on either side. The fittings are all understated, harmonizing with the vessel’s rounded form.
The vermilion lacquer has deepened to a dark, almost black tone. The surface faintly reveals the wood grain, and scuffs, fine scratches, and impact marks have settled naturally into the lacquered finish.
The lid is removable, revealing an interior of ample depth. It appears to be a utilitarian chest for storing garments or implements. Width 51 cm; height 31 cm. These dimensions are well suited to the storage of tea utensils, textiles, documents, and similar items.
The lacquer surface bears abrasions, scratches, impact marks, and unevenness in the coating. The lid and body exhibit small cracks, while the rims show chipping and wear. The metal fittings retain a period-appropriate tarnish.
