Tea host|入蘆花 (Rocaniiru)
When I was in high school, I once climbed a small hill on a summer moonlit night and drank tea. Below the summit, the moon faintly illuminated the countryside, and in the silence, I was surrounded by the sounds of grasshoppers, crickets, and bullfrogs. As I sipped tea, I gradually felt myself becoming part of that world. It was an experience that marked the beginning of ROCANIIRU.
Since then, I have visited the mountains many times, spending time with tea while listening closely to the breath of the forest. Tea is not merely a drink; it is a dialogue with nature—a way to connect with the atmosphere and time of a place. It links people together and, at times, offers quiet moments to cherish oneself.

In Matsumoto, a mountain city looking east to Utsukushigahara and west to the Northern Alps, we have been offered the use of a secret mountain area and an old folk house through someone's generosity. We hope to share a tea time with you that is neither in a tearoom nor in the open-air Nodate style, but rather one that engages the body and the five senses amidst the mountains.
April 14 | Tea Gathering “Fire, Earth, Water”
Fire generates heat and light, earth supports our steps, and water nourishes life. This tea gathering honors the natural elements—fire, earth, and water. Together, we will draw mountain spring water, construct a hearth with stones, kindle a fire with mountain branches, and enjoy tea enveloped in the warmth of the flames. As the mountain ridges fade into twilight, we’ll gaze at the rising flames and savor a 2024 vintage Zhengyan Wuyi Shuixian and a 40-year-aged Zhengyan Laocha.
April 15 | Tea Gathering “Tea, As It Is”
This day includes a light mountain walk of about four hours round-trip. After walking through nature and enjoying a wild herb bento by the stream, we will prepare a tea setting in the forest. Just as John Cage loved the sounds of the forest, we will attune our ears to “this very moment” and enjoy tea with the rustle of leaves and whisper of wind. If Cage had been a tea person—this is the spirit with which we welcome you.

Walking is an act that deepens our connection with nature, and breath is a natural will born within us that cannot be stopped. Let us enjoy tea time with open senses—tasting the mountain air, gazing at shifting scenery, listening to the mountain’s sounds, savoring the aromas, and waiting for water to boil in the mountain.
The tea is made from natural leaves gathered in the mountain forest, and we also craft tea from herbs and bark found in the woods. We’ll also enjoy Dingmei created by my beloved tea master, Gao Ding-shi.
The time spent preparing the tea and drinking it flows as one, binding us more deeply to the “now.” I sincerely look forward to sharing such moments with you. The flicker of fire and water, the scent of earth, the breath of the forest—may these two days be filled with experiencing nature through all five senses, together with tea.
Warm regards, Rocaniiru
