An incense container that unites lotus root, lingzhi, and bamboo shoot into a single form. Bulges recalling the nodes of a lotus root, curling protuberances like lingzhi, and the overlapping tips of bamboo sheaths run continuously from lid to body. Though small enough to fit in the palm, its appearance shifts with each change of orientation.

The dark brown-black glaze shifts with the angle of light to blue-green, indigo, purple, and brown, producing a pronounced iridescence. Along the ridges the clay body shows through, while in recesses and on the interior the blue-green glaze has pooled deeply. Fine crazing runs across the glazed surface, overlapping the carved relief and the subtle variations in glaze color.

Lotus root, lingzhi, and bamboo shoot have long been associated with longevity, prosperity, and vital energy. Rather than arranging them as decorative motifs, this uncommon sculptural form unites them into a single three‑dimensional composition—bringing together auspicious plants while assuming a somewhat otherworldly aspect.

There is a mark on the base. The piece was passed down through an old household that owned many notable examples of Raku ware. The kiln and maker are unknown, and it has not been definitively established that this is Raku ware.

Surface abrasion, soiling, areas of glaze loss, and minor scratches consistent with age. The original box is included, though its lid is missing. When opened, the interior reveals pools of bluish‑green glaze distinct from the exterior; this incense container’s subtle shifts in color and form are best appreciated when handled.
