A Joseon Dynasty box (wittaji).

This is a nearly square, box-shaped chest with low legs and a top-opening lid. Its width and depth are both 47cm, dimensions ample for storing clothing and personal belongings. Broad surfaces of black lacquer are fitted with brass hardware, a succinct composition characteristic of Joseon furniture.

The surface is finished in black lacquer. There are areas of wear and minor scratches from use and some irregularity in the wood, yet the lustrous black plane has depth and harmonizes well with the subdued tones of the brass fittings.

The front is fitted with a flower-shaped lock plate and circular ring pulls, while triangular decorative fittings are affixed to the four corners and sides. The metal fittings serve as ornamentation and also protect the corners and the seams of the boards. Cutaway carving around the base adds a restrained variation to the box’s rectilinear silhouette.

The interior is lined with scrap paper printed with Chinese characters. In Joseon chests and boxes, paper was often pasted to the interior to prevent wood splinters and the transfer of dirt, thereby protecting the contents. This example retains that practical treatment.

This top-opening chest is suitable for practical use and can also serve as a stand for flowers or decorative displays. It is a functional chest with a particularly pleasing presence.
