This is a challenging area to assess due to the lack of comparable examples; however, based on the clay and the firing characteristics, we believe this piece to be an ancient Ko-Shigaraki from the Muromachi to early Edo period (circa 1336–1573 CE). It can be considered an exceptionally rare yagen (grater). The accompanying yagen car is well-preserved, though the wooden components show signs of drying and insect damage, yet remain sturdy. The wooden parts and yagen car are designed to be secured by inserting wooden fragments. The yagen car will be disassembled for shipping. We highly recommend using this piece as a cooking utensil, whether for a tea ceremony or in a kaiseki setting across a counter. It also serves beautifully as a flower vase.
