FLAT BOTTLE, Sue Ware, Nara–Heian Period（710–1185CE）

A Sue ware flat bottle dating to the Nara–Heian period (c. 710–1185 CE).

The flat bottle is a form in which a slightly compressed body bears the neck and mouth set to one side, a shape well suited to pouring liquids. It first appeared in the early seventh century and continued to be made through the Nara and Heian periods. Early examples have a rounded body, but from the Nara period onward, as in this example, a distinct ridge develops at the shoulder and the body becomes progressively flatter.

This small flat bottle fits in the palm of the hand. Its low, flattened body is topped by an obliquely rising neck and mouth, and a small pierced handle is attached. Though diminutive, the shoulder ridge and the swelling of the body are well preserved, clearly revealing the characteristic form of the flat bottle.

The firing has produced an ash-gray to black color, and the surface shows fine wheel marks and the granular texture of the clay. Occasional encrustations and firing-induced roughness remain, lending the subdued surface quality characteristic of Sue ware that has aged over a long period.

Rather than serving as a practical sake vessel, this is a piece to be appreciated as a small ancient form—placed on a shelf or in the corner of a tea room. In its compact silhouette the distinctive appeal of ancient Sue ware shapes is beautifully distilled.

As an antique, the rim and body bear small chips, abrasions, encrustations, and irregularities in the clay. Please appreciate these as part of the object's surface character.
