A butterfly-shaped water dropper from the Joseon Dynasty.

A small butterfly-shaped water dropper, modeled three-dimensionally with wings outspread and a bulging central body. Holes at either end allow water to be poured; while serving the practical purpose of a writing implement, it retains the charm of a miniature sculpture.

A milky glaze is suffused with lapis-blue that bleeds across the surface, and the wings are decorated with incised linear motifs. The blue’s tone is delicately diffused, while patches of iron-brown kiln change appear here and there, producing a patina typical of antique ceramics. The butterfly’s uncontrived expression, the flowing glaze, and the emergence of the clay’s texture all suggest the broad, unaffected handwork characteristic of the Joseon dynasty.

Though modest in scale, it possesses a quiet presence—equally suited to rest at a desk as a writing accessory and to present as a small antique on a tea table or shelf. When paired with white porcelain, natural wood, or lacquerware, a subtle wash of blue and iron-gray emerges.

The base shows kiln sand adhering from firing; the sides and rim display age-appropriate glaze loss, wear, and minor scratches. As an older water dropper, it has no major damage that significantly alters its form and retains a pleasing, well-aged condition.
