A carp-shaped water dropper in lapis glaze, made during the Joseon Dynasty.

This small water dropper, shaped like a carp, bears a plantlike motif on its back and linear incisions on the tail. A lapis glaze has been allowed to bleed over the white body, the varying intensities of blue spreading softly across the diminutive surface. Its slightly irregular form and glaze convey the simple, unpretentious charm characteristic of small Joseon wares.

A water dropper is a desk implement used to add water to an inkstone. In the Joseon dynasty, small water droppers shaped like animals, fish, peaches, and lotuses were produced; while practical in function, they were also objects of refined appreciation when placed on the desk. This example, though small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, harmonizes the carp form with a lapis-blue glaze, imparting a quiet pleasure to the scholar’s desk.

The base shows exposed clay and adherent deposits; overall there are glaze irregularities, areas of rubbing, minor scratches, and age-related soiling. Water apertures at the spout and on the back ensure that its form as a water dropper is well preserved. Recommended both as a small desk implement and as a collector’s object of Joseon ceramics.
