焼締陶の源流は、古代中国の殷（いん）代にはじまる灰陶と呼ばれる硬質土器にまで遡ります。大きな穴窯の中で、高温で焼き締める技法は、三国時代の朝鮮半島を統一しようとしていた新羅（しらぎ）へと伝わりました。

本品は、非常に珍しい全体に草文が彫られた新羅土器です。秋草文でしょうか。発掘品の為、かせが見られますが、状態が良く、完器形を保っています。花入として、野の草花を呼び込むような佇まいです。土器特有の現象として、長時間水を入れると、器表全体が湿ってきます。また、水を含むと、古代の土器特有の強い土臭が出ます。
