IRON CANDLESTICK, With openwork design, Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897 CE)

The pairing of the slim shaft and the broadly projecting base is well balanced, and its quiet, upright presence commands attention.

The sides of the base are boldly pierced in the iron, forming a succession of geometric motifs. The patterns cut from the substantial metal are not uniform; the thickness of the lines and the contours show subtle variations. At the very top, the candle pan rises with an openwork recalling a mountain form, introducing an airy openness that contrasts with the weighty mass below.

Candlesticks of the Joseon period were made from a variety of materials—wood, brass, and iron among them—and, while essentially utilitarian, their forms often reflect the styles of particular times and regions. This example incorporates ornament into the iron structure itself: an openwork base, a two-tiered drip pan, and a slender elongated shaft form a continuous whole. The piece combines the unadorned simplicity of a light-bearing tool with the robust, characteristic shaping of Joseon ironware.

The two drip pans retain warping from prolonged use, and traces of handwork are visible on the shaft and joints. The openwork on the base is partly missing, yet the continuity of the pattern is well preserved. The surface is layered with rust and a dark brown patina, with the iron beneath visible in places. Unlike uniformly finished metalwork, the iron surface, developed over a long period, remains intact.

Despite its tall silhouette, the openwork relieves any sense of weight, giving the candlestick an appealing presence when displayed. Even unlit, it is entirely compelling as an iron form and harmonizes well with antique ceramics and wooden objects.
