The Sanage kiln, which began producing Sue ware during the late Kofun period, is an ancient kiln that disappeared around the end of the Kamakura period. As a central kiln site in the Tokai region, it has left behind an extensive array of ceramic wares, unmatched in any other region for its prolonged and large-scale production of smoke.

This piece features finely incised lines and is a three-lined jar with two bands at the base, likely intended for storing items such as sutra scrolls. Crafted using the coil-building technique, the clay is meticulously stacked and shaped, with the surface smoothed using a spatula and the rim elegantly beveled. It is adorned with an ash glaze made from plant ash, resulting in a remarkable finish that, despite being a fragment, conveys the impressive presence of the ancient kiln.

This exquisite item invites the desire to be used as a flower vase in a tea ceremony, showcasing its versatility and beauty.
