A rare Ko-Imari yagen in underglaze blue from the late Edo to early Meiji period. The trough is boat-shaped with its ends gently upturned and is fitted with two applied feet splayed outward in a V-shape; it was made as a practical implement for grinding and pulverizing medicinal materials.
The body is entirely encircled with a dense arabesque scroll rendered in fine underglaze-blue lines; the central area of each side is set off like a framed panel and painted with a landscape-inspired design. Arabesque decoration also appears on the chamfered surfaces of the foot. A transparent glaze covers the slightly bluish white porcelain body, while the underglaze blue shows the soft, gently diffused tones characteristic of Imari, with occasional areas of bleeding.
Porcelain yagen are uncommon, and this example is in good condition. Its form sets off wildflowers to pleasing effect, and it may also be enjoyed as a flower vase.
