This Suzu jar with an impressed design dates to the Kamakura period.
Suzu ware, produced chiefly on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, is an unglazed, high-fired stoneware that developed from the late Heian into the medieval era. This piece exemplifies the impressed-design jar, a characteristic vessel form of the tradition.

The body is rounded and tapers smoothly from the shoulder to the rim. The vessel's surface retains fine impressions from repeated beating across its entirety which, together with horizontal incised lines, gives a simple yet richly textured appearance. The vigorous traces of medieval pottery making—the pounding and compacting of the clay and its firing—are clearly evident.

The ash-gray surface reveals, in places, the reddish tones of the clay, giving it a quiet, kiln-aged presence. The appeal of Suzu ware lies not in motifs painted as decoration but in how the maker’s gestures remain, uncontrived, as the piece’s own visual landscape.

The rim bears substantial loss and an old repair, yet the fullness of the body and the vigor of the hammered decoration remain well preserved. Rather than serving to hold flowers, the jar itself, simply placed and contemplated, becomes the visual anchor of the space.
