HAEJU-BAN, Openwork-carved with swastika design, Joseon Dynasty（1392–1897CE）

A Haeju-ban from the Joseon Dynasty featuring an openwork swastika design.
The Haeju-ban is a form of tray-table from the Korean peninsula: a small, straight-lined low table with plank-like legs set upright on either side.

This piece features openwork swastika motifs on both sides, with floral openwork beneath. The front is carved with a scrolling, arabesque-like pattern, and because the decoration arcs toward each of the two legs, the haeju-ban has a somewhat rounded, gentle appearance.

The top is rectangular, with a low raised rim encircling the edge. The deep wood, with a subtle reddish cast, bears layered scuffs and sheen from long use, imparting the subdued character typical of Joseon woodworking. Light and shadow filter through the openwork of the side panels, producing a pleasing sense of airiness when the piece is set on the floor.

This soban presents beautifully as a low table for tea or liquor vessels and also serves well as a stand for flower arrangements or antique ceramics. In good condition, it shows evidence of careful use over time and retains a pleasing, composed presence.
