A square tea caddy of antique pewter, made during the Qing dynasty.

The body is square with subtly rounded corners, rising to a cylindrical mouth in an impeccably restrained profile. Unadorned, its quiet form is composed solely of planes and edges, and the subdued silvery-gray typical of antique pewter envelops the whole. When lifted it is remarkably light, the thinly wrought pewter revealing a delicately wrought construction characteristic of such vessels.

Tinware in China has long been used for tea caddies, tea saucers, bottle stands and drinking vessels. Its tendency to resist moisture makes it especially suitable for storing tea leaves, and it has been treasured as a utensil for sencha and Chinese tea for many years. This piece may be used as a small tea caddy for tea leaves or as an element of a tea‑table arrangement.

The surface bears tin's characteristic scuffs, fine scratches, and an age-softened patina. Wear at the corners and base attests to long use, giving the metal vessel a distinct expression. Its square form sits neatly on the tabletop and harmonizes with a red clay teapot, white porcelain cups, or an antique tray. Modest in scale, this antique tin tea caddy lends a quiet, grounding presence to the tea setting.
