OLD TETSUBIN, Qing Dynasty（1616–1911CE）

An old cast-iron kettle made in China during the Qing dynasty.

In Japan these are often identified as Joseon tetsubin, but such pieces are considered iron kettles produced in China from the late Ming through the Qing dynasty. They were used to brew tea or as hot‑water vessels, and they convey the character of China’s older tea‑drinking customs to the present day.

A squat, substantial body is fitted with a short, robust spout, and the upper section is equipped with an iron lid and a large handle. Though apparently made solely to fulfill its function without decoration, its unadorned simplicity projects a strong presence. The thick iron surface shows layers of age—rust and a dark-brown, weathered texture accumulated over a long period—revealing the deep expression characteristic of antique ironware.

Lu Yu’s The Classic of Tea from the Tang dynasty also describes iron vessels used for boiling tea. Such iron kettles, as implements connected to the older practice of boiling tea and heating water, sit naturally within literati tea culture and other Chinese tea settings.

Rust, surface pitting, interior discoloration and signs of use are evident overall. As this is an old iron kettle, if it is to be used, season it while removing the rusty odor—traditionally by repeatedly simmering green tea or by boiling water and discarding it. The construction is notably substantial, with a thick base. This is a robust, well-aged iron kettle intended to be used and allowed to develop its character over time.
