RECTANGULAR KARAKI BURL WOOD TEA TRAY

A rectangular karaki burl-wood tray made during the Qing dynasty.

A low, thin rectangular tray with a raised rim and neatly mitered corners, showing a restrained, well-proportioned construction. The material is burl, and the tray surface reveals complex figure with small speckles and swirling patterns. A deep, warm reddish sheen and the mellowed patina developed through long use combine to give it the quiet presence characteristic of karaki trays.

It is believed to have been originally made as an incense tray for holding censers and incense utensils. In Chinese scholar’s studies and incense rooms, censers, incense boxes, fire implements, and the like were gathered on small trays and arranged on the desk. This example, with its compact rectangular form and low, tightly proportioned construction, likewise possesses an air well suited to such a quiet setting.

At the same time, it is often used as a sencha tray. Its size is well suited to hold a small teapot, cups, and tea saucers, and the deep tones of karaki wood set off tea wares such as white porcelain, red clay, and antique pewter. Within the spare rectangular form the burl figure emerges like a landscape, quietly evoking the world of literati tea.
