OLD LOTUS-LEAF-SHAPED BAMBOO CONFECTIONERY BOWL, With wooden box, Mitate (kensui), Meiji Period (1868–1912 CE)

Meiji period — an antique bamboo confectionery bowl shaped like a lotus leaf.

This Meiji-period confectionery bowl is carved from a single bamboo stalk in the form of a lotus leaf. The rim undulates gently, and the interior bears grooves that suggest leaf veins, so the piece reads as a lotus leaf repurposed into a vessel. A circular foot wraps the lower section, giving it a lightness while maintaining a confident presence.

The bamboo surface retains fine tool marks and a texture reminiscent of weaving, and displays a warm reddish luster and a mellow patina developed through long use. Wear around the rim and abrasions on the surface have blended in naturally, creating the characteristic appearance of aged bamboo.

Its low profile and the soft, lotus-leaf contours make it suitable not only as a confectionery bowl but also, in the tea room, to be quietly placed as a kensui (waste-water bowl).

Some insect damage is apparent, but it does not penetrate through to the reverse, and the overall condition is good. The well-used bamboo surface retains a gentle sheen and an appealing aged patina. A wooden box is included.
