A white-glazed bowl from the Song Dynasty.

A bowl with a smoothly rounded rim, set on a low foot.
The interior and exterior are coated in a white glaze, its surface marked by fine black-brown speckling.

These mottlings are not applied decoration but the result of alteration of the white glaze while it remained in the soil.
A reaction between the glaze surface and soil components produced a frost-mottled surface.

A concentric stepped ring is present in the interior, and the glaze surface shows crazing, soil staining, and adhering deposits.
Around the footring the body is exposed, with red-brown soil staining remaining. The rim shows wear, and overall there are encrustations consistent with excavation.

It may also be regarded as a stand for Chinese tea or for sencha.
