This is a Yamachawan (Mountain Tea Bowl) from the Ko-Tokoname tradition, dating from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period (1185–1333 CE). While it can be classified as a type of tea bowl, it represents a rustic, unglazed ceramic that was produced over approximately 400 years, beginning in the late 11th century and continuing until the late 15th century, during the early Sengoku period. This piece emerged during a time when the mass production of ash-glazed ceramics was transforming the market, shifting from luxury items to more everyday wares.
This particular bowl is a relatively early example of the Yamachawan, showcasing a captivating reddish hue. Its condition is excellent, inviting the thought of being adorned with wildflowers.
