A Sue ware bowl dating from the Nara to Heian periods.
Its form departs from the standard bowl type, inviting it to be seen not only as a tea bowl but also as a water dropper.

Rising from the earth and having passed through fire, it bears the presence of an ancient kiln left after long ages. Two sunken grooves encircle the thickly formed body, presenting a simple yet powerful silhouette. The ash-brown surface characteristic of Sue ware preserves traces of the kiln’s flame, small stones contained in the clay, and uneven effects of firing, remaining as they are to give the work a coarse, quietly composed expression typical of ancient ceramics.

The rim is slightly distorted into an oval, and the body shows a subtle waviness. There is an old repair to the rim. Additional photographs showing the piece with a spoon, suggesting its use as a water dropper, have been included; please view them.
