CUP, Engraved with fern design, a, Meiji Period（1868–1912CE）

This exquisite piece is a small glass cup crafted during the Meiji Period, utilizing the technique of engraving. The wide-mouthed vessel features a delicately incised fern design, embodying simplicity and elegance. Its size is ideal for use as a sake cup, offering a comfortable grip. Subtle bubbles and slight distortions are visible on the body and foot, reflecting the artisanal craftsmanship involved in the blowing and finishing processes, which lend the piece a gentle character.

The engraving technique, known as "gravure," involves carving the glass surface with a blade, allowing for nuanced shading and depth in the design. Introduced to Japan through state-run factories, such as the Shinagawa Glass Manufacturing Company, following the Meiji Restoration, this Western technique was embraced and refined by local artisans. In this work, one can observe the mastery of the craftsman, who has skillfully absorbed and adapted foreign techniques to create a delicate and realistic motif.

The fern has long been cherished in Japan as a symbol of longevity and prosperity. Interestingly, in 19th-century Western culture, it became a favored motif within the contexts of Art Nouveau and Japonisme, spurred by a fervent fascination known as "pteridomania." This motif resonates with both Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities, maintaining its cultural richness even when engraved on such a small surface, embodying sophistication within simplicity.
