A carved Ainu nima from the early Shōwa period. Nima is a general term for Ainu woodenware; this piece is a small wooden dish about three sun in size. The tray is rectangular with the corners chamfered, the interior shallowly hollowed, and a geometric motif carved at the center. Subtle carving at the four corners and the compact scale convey a concentrated sense of handwork.

Unlike the thick, rigid construction found in later souvenir items, these are thin, light, and display a natural irregularity in the way the wood was worked. The well-used wood surface has developed a subtle sheen, and the reverse of each piece is inscribed "Ainu inscription".

As a confectionery dish it is suitable for small dry sweets or nuts, and it also complements sencha service and other tea utensils. Set of five.
